The 40th Session of the UN Human Rights Council began today in Geneva, Switzerland. The High-Level Segment of the 40th Session of the Human Rights Council which convened today will continue till the 27th of February 2019.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Mr Abdulla Shahid, will address the High-Level Segment of the Session today. In his statement Minister Shahid will brief the Council on the positive steps taken by H. E. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s Government to protect and promote human rights in the Maldives and emphasise the commitment to re-engage more constructively with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Procedures Mandate-holders. During this visit, Minister Shahid will also meet with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and hold bilateral meetings with other high-level dignitaries.

In line with its policies and key priorities at the UN Human Rights Council, the Maldives will also co-sponsor resolutions, including the human rights situation of Syrian Arab Republic and OIC led resolutions on the human situation of Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem. The Maldives will also actively participate at the negotiations of several other resolutions, panel discussions, interactive dialogues and general debates, including the rights of persons with disabilities, rights of the child, Interactive Dialogue on terrorism and as well as environment.

The general segment of the 40th Session of the Human Rights Council will continue after the High-Level Segment from the 28th of February till 22nd March 2019, for a period of 3 weeks.

The Maldives delegation also includes Her Excellency Dr Hala Hameed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Offices at Geneva, Ms Hawla Didi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Maldives to UN Geneva, Mr. Amin Javed Faisal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms Shahiya Ali Manik, First Secretary at the Embassy of Maldives in London and Ms Aishath Shahula, First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva.
