Delivered on 14 November 2017

Delivered by Jeffrey Salim Waheed, Minister and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office and other International Organisations

Thank you, Mr. President,

On behalf of the Maldives, allow me to express our warmest appreciation for the Government and people of Japan, having celebrated this year, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan. We take positive note of the National Report, and welcome the delegation to this review.

The Maldives further welcomes Japan’s ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the enforcement of the Act for Eliminating Discrimination Against Persons. We are encouraged by the Government’s efforts to raise awareness of Human Rights through providing human rights education and training for public servants. The Maldives is further encouraged by the adoption of the Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace Act of 2015.

The Maldives recommends that Japan continue with the positive work already being implemented to combat domestic violence, in particular agaisnt foreign, minority and indigenous workers and through ensuring that victims have support, care and redress for the abuse.

We wish Japan every success in this review. Thank you, Mr. President.
