Delivered on 21 March 2016
Delivered by Statement by Her Excellency Dr. Hala Hameed, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary / Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva
The Maldives welcomes the Special Rapporteur, Mr. Makarim Wibisono and thank him for the very comprehensive report, despite complete non-cooperation by Israel. We reiterate our strong condemnation of the systematic violations of human rights incessantly perpetrated by the Israeli forces in the Palestinian Territories.
Every day media brings us the disturbing news of human rights violations committed by the Israeli authorities on the Palestinian people, innocent civilians including women and children.. The Maldivesstrongly supports the request by the President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, to place the territory of State of Palestine under an international protection system by the United Nations.
We regret to note that the Government of Israel rejected most of the recommendations made at the UPR concerning the OPT. The Maldives is also deeply concerned about the inhumane treatment of children arrested and kept in Israeli detention facilities. We also note that recently a small child was taken under custody and questioned twice, without parents or an attorney being present. This is just one example of a series of violations of international law perpetrated by the Israeli authorities.
The world has watched such injustice for too long. We are deeply concerned by the lack of assertive action from the international community. It is time to go further than just condemnation in words. It is time to take collective action against the inhuman atrocities and to assure protection of all rights of all Palestinians, for which they have been fighting for over half a century. We further support the call by the SR on the international community to redouble efforts to exert pressure on Israel.
To conclude, the Maldives reiterates its calls upon Israel to immediately halt allpolicies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, such as continued settlement expansion, the construction of the wall, and the blockade of Gaza, which are illegal under international law and entail serious violations of the human rights of Palestinians. We further call on this Council to expedite the appointment of the next Special Procedure mandate holder which is currently vacant, or look at alternate ways to fill the gap to ensure rights of Palestinians continue to be given its due attention by this Council (this is a request by Palestine since West is trying to delay the appointment of a mandate holder when the previous person resigned).
