Delivered on 14th September 2017

Delivered by Mr. Jeffrey Salim Waheed, Minister and Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva

Mr. President,

The Human Rights Council is the principle structure to guide global norms on the protection and promotion of human rights. We do this through identifying conditions of human rights abuse and garnering consensus to remedy such abuse to remedy inequality and injustice. In a world, where the weak and marginalized face indignity and indifference, it is this organ which is tasked with safeguarding a better future for the common good of all.

In a time when the 2030 Agenda now paves the way for promotion and protection of human rights through inclusive holistic and therefore sustainable development, my delegation is concerned by ongoing human rights violations, including the rise of hate speech and hate crimes in various parts of the world. We also take note of the grave situations in Yemen, South Sudan and Palestine where vulnerable populations are subjected to limited access to food and basic necessities robbing them of their fundamental human rights and of human dignity. We emphasize that, to ensure we reach the Global goals of the 2030 Agenda, it is imperative for us all to foster a cohesive enabling environment that that does not compromise basic human rights, and achieves consensus through equal participation for all in every aspect of development, including Human Rights.

In this regard, we reiterate the importance of cooperation between States, and the need for a unified approach towards the global context of inclusive development. Central to this is ensuring human dignity and equality, as without these, the right to development cannot be pursued effectively. To overcome rhetoric’s of hate, discrimination and politics of division, it is more important than ever for us to strive for consensus. In this regard, we urge states to cease from using the Council as means to polarize the international community but rather fuel the Council as a vehicle it is to accomplish greater good.

We look forward to being part of collective discussions this Council session to achieve greater consensus and work towards the betterment of humanity.

Thank you, Mr. President.
