Delivered on 25 September 2017

Delivered by Dr Hala Hameed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations in Geneva

Thank you, Mr. President,

The Republic of the Maldives reasserts its full solidarity and support for the people and the State of Palestine.

My delegation condemns Israel’s systematic violations of the human rights of Palestinians, including the right to property, freedom of movement, development, and self-determination.

It is with deep concern that we witnessed the energy crisis in Gaza last April, which not only paralyzed the healthcare and sewage systems and forced farmers halt their work, but also left 90% of the population without access to safe drinking water for a considerable period of time.

Despite repeated UNSC Resolutions, declaring settlements in occupied Palestine, including East Jerusalem, as violating international law, we witness with great concern the continuous establishment of illegal Israeli settlements. Further, the indiscriminate appropriation of Palestinian resources, together with the restrictions placed upon the Palestinian people, constitutes a system of oppression and discrimination, which robs both the oppressor and oppressed of basic human decency and human dignity.

Mr. President:

The consequences prolonged violence and the depravation of basic human rights across not years, nor decades, but rather across the span of generations is forever the responsibility of the international community. In this instance, both our silence and our inability to seek and attain justice is an unfortunate legacy we all share.

The Maldives calls upon the international community to prioritise the peace process to seek lasting peace for the people of Palestine. My delegation reiterates the view that an independent, sovereign State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, established along the 1967 borders, is the only solution for lasting peace.

Thank you, Mr. President
