Delivered on 22 March 2017
Delivered by Dr Hala Hameed, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva
Thank you Mr President,
The Maldives commends Sri Lanka on the positive engagements with the UN, and with the OHCHR. Sri Lanka is our neighbour and we understand the enormous challenges that the country is facing in its post-conflict reconciliation, reintegration and peacebuilding efforts. The Maldives applauds Sri Lanka for the ambitious reforms that are currently being implemented and we wish Sri Lanka every success.
As the High Commissioner’s Report states, we are confident that the structural reforms that are underway in Sri Lanka will strengthen systemic safeguards on human rights related issues. Further we are heartened to see the creation of ad hoc bodies such as the Consultation Task Force on Reconciliation Mechanisms aimed to implement reconciliation and accountability.
The Maldives is encouraged by the positive steps that the Government of Sri Lanka has taken in implementing the recommendations of the Human Rights Council and those contained in the High Commissioner’s report.
