Delivered on 13 March 2017
Delivered by Mr Jeffrey Salim Waheed, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Permanent Mission of Maldives Office at Geneva
My delegation would like to thank you for bringing us all together today to discuss imperative issues such as these for it is truly the foundation of augmentation of this council. Let me also express our gratitude toward the Special Rapporteurs for their updates and for the comprehensive reports presented under this Agenda Item. The Maldives is deeply concerned about the ongoing several human rights situations either addressed here at the council or that still requires all of our serious attention.
The Maldives is concerned about the human rights violations against the Rohingya minority group. The Maldives condemns any forms of systemic discrimination and persecution on the grounds of cultural or religious belief.
We unequivocally condemn all practices and policies that involve violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law. This is why we believe that conditions in the occupied Palestine and the Syrian Golan cannot be improved without adherence to the principles of inadmissibility of acquiring land by force, and non-discrimination, as enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The Maldives in this regard, reiterates its strong and steadfast support for the rights of the Palestine, including the need for a two-state solution, as a fundamental step towards safeguarding the human rights of the Palestinian people and finally providing them with the right to self-determination.
The Maldives delegation would also like to note with serious concern the increasing mistreatment of refugees who are fleeing war and repression. Countries, especially those who have the means, need to show more compassion in addressing plight of the refugees.
The Maldives delegation would like to formally request the ongoing cooperation upon the international community to take a united stand against all injustices going on around the world today. Let us continue to strive for a world of peace, security and freedom for all human beings.
