Delivered on: 21 September 2017
Delivered by: Dr Hala Hameed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations in Geneva
The Maldives welcomes the delegation of the UK and thanks it for its update during the review. We are also encouraged by the participation of 95 other countries during the review.
The Maldives appreciates the support of the UK on three of the recommendations made by the Maldives.
We are also greatly encouraged by the country’s decision to remain a signatory of the European Convention on Human Rights, despite “Brexit.”
However, we express our concern that our recommendations on climate change were not supported by the UK Government. Though the UK is a party to the Paris Agreement and other climate treaties, that it would refuse to support the rights of its citizens to clean air and its to include its children’s future as a fundamental component of its adaptation strategies is highly concerning.
We wish the delegation of UK success in the implementation of the recommendations made.
Thank you, Mr. President
