Delivered by Ms Aishath Shahula, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva

Thank you, Mr. President,

The Maldives welcomes the oral update provided by the Special Rapporteur, and other reports submitted under this agenda item. Let me reaffirm my country’s full support for the Special Rapporteur, his recommendations, and urge other countries to cooperate with his mandate.

The Maldives thanks the council and its esteemed members for their continuous efforts to bring peace to Palestine, specifically the unlawfully occupied territories of East Jerusalem by the Israeli forces.

Mr President,

The Maldives is appalled by the systematic human rights violations that are inflicted on the civilian population of Palestine. We call on Israel to uphold and respect the basic rights of the population living under occupation, in accordance with relevant international instruments. The Maldives asserts that both Palestine and Israel must exist within sovereign borders based on pre-1967 demarcations, living side by side at peace, with East Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital.

The Israeli government methodically detains and prosecutes children in a military court system lacking the right of due process. Children ages 12 -17 are mistreated by the Israeli forces, they are locked in jail, subjected to inhumane physical violence and interrogated without a parent present. This is a violation of international law and a violation of the Convention against the Rights of the Child. Most importantly, it is a violation of basic human rights of Palestinian children.

Our question to the Special Rapporteur is as follows;

  • What measures have you taken, in collaboration and cooperation with other mechanisms such as treaty bodies and special procedures mandate holders, to collectively address or gather information concerning the issues you have raised in your oral update.

Thank you Mr President.
