Delivered by H.E Dr. Hala Hameed, Ambassador |Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva
Thank you Mr. President,
Let me take this opportunity to extend the sincere thanks of my Government and my delegation to High Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein. Over the last four years, you have ably guided global discourse on Human Rights with an even hand, speaking up for the world’s most vulnerable populations, and the most disadvantaged people across the world. Now more than ever, we need international human rights institutions and mechanisms that are credible, impartial, and strongly focused on the rights and voices of victims.
We take this opportunity to once again reiterate our commitment to pursuing meaningful and constructive dialogue across the breadth of human rights issues with all relevant stakeholders. The Maldives is committed to continue consistent engagement with international human rights institutions, and to interacting with civil society in order to address human rights issues on multiple fronts. Indeed, we agree with the distinguished High Commissioner, “true patriotism consists in viewing every State, and humanity as a whole, as a community of mutual responsibility, with shared needs and goals.”
As the High Commissioner noted in his presentation, it is “only when States all work for each other, for everyone, for all people, for the human rights of all people – can peace be attainable.” We must work, united in common purpose, and without prejudice for any nation.
Thank you Mr President.
