Delivered on 02 July 2018
Delivered by H.E Hala Hameed, Ambassador | Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva
Thank you, Mr. President,
The Maldives aligns itself with the statement delivered by the delegation of Pakistan on behalf of the OIC.
Let me reiterate my delegation’s strong support for the retention of Agenda Item 7, in the work of this Council. If this Council shies away from discussing the world’s longest signle set of human rights violations, across the span of generations past, and yet to come in State of Palestine and in other Occupied Territories; if we belittle the fear, hatred and violence that this occupation fuels within these two nations, and indeed across all our countries, then the purpose, the principles and the pragmatism of the august body is forsaken. And that too, at the expense of innocent civilian children, women and men who have every right to basic human dignity.
The Maldives urges the international community to prioritise peace. My delegation reiterates its support for an independent, sovereign State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, established along the pre-1967 borders, as the only solution for lasting peace. It is time that we, the international community, and the United Nations agencies in particular, to put an end to the de facto apartheid in these nations, to change the reality on the ground. Not just for the sake of these people, but for the sake of all our peoples across the world.
Thank you, Mr. President
