The Maldives would like to take this opportunity to thank the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for organizing the annual thematic discussion on technical cooperation and capacity-building in the field of human rights. We welcome the report presented under this item and thank the panellists for their valuable inputs. We commend the work of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to strengthen human rights, especially through the provision of technical assistance and capacity building to States that request such assistance.
The Maldives recognizes the invaluable support of the Voluntary Technical Assistance Trust Fund to Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States. This fund continuously enhances the ability of these States to participate in the progressive achievements of this Council. Additionally, the last ten years of developing and implementing OHCHR technical cooperation programmes with key State partners, in cooperation with other United Nations agencies and regional organizations, have been particularly fruitful in terms of results and the development of good practices.
On many previous occasions, the Maldives has stated that many States are constrained by financial and social resources rendering them unable to contribute to the dialogue of advancing human rights through international cooperation. In this regard, special support to the LDCs and SIDS through the trust fund to support the participation of LDCs and SIDS has increased engagement with the Human Rights Council and the international human rights system in general.
The Maldives reaffirms to work closely with OHCHR to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for the realization of human rights. Further, the Government of Maldives reiterate the request made by the Government for technical expertise from the UN to strengthen the national mechanisms for promoting and protecting human rights in the Maldives. The Maldives counts on the support of OHCHR to assist us, as well as other States that may require assistance in reaching the milestones, goals and aspirations each State will have for the protection of its people.
Thank you Mr. President.
