Delivered on 18 January 2018

Delivered by Ms Aishath Shahula, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva

Thank you, Mr. President,

Maldives welcomes the delegation of Burundi to this third cycle review and thanks the delegation for their presentation today.

The Maldives notes the efforts made by the Government of Burundi to improve its legal and institutional human rights framework. We welcome the adoption of laws on the prevention and repression of trafficking in persons and the protection of victims of trafficking as well as the establishment of a related National Committee.

In constructive spirit, the Maldives extends two recommendations to Burundi:

  1. Adopt and implement effective measures to address sexual violence against women and girls
  2. Accelerate efforts to improve health services, especially in rural areas through the effective implementation of the National Health Policy 2016-2025

We wish Burundi every success at this Review.

Thank you, Mr. President
