Delivered on 24 January 2017

Delivered by Mr. Jeffrey Salim Waheed, Minister and Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva

Thank you, Madam Vice President,

The Maldives welcomes the high-level delegation of Liechtenstein to this third cycle review and thanks the delegation for their presentation today.

The Maldives welcomes the creation of an Independent National Human Rights Institution with the recent enactment of the Law on the Association for Human Rights.

The Maldives commends the progress made towards protection of the rights of the persons with disabilities including the recent adoption of the “Law on the equality of Persons with Disabilities’ and the establishment of a networking support group, “Sichtwechsel”, which, supports, organises activities, and raises awareness and informs the public of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

In a constructive spirit, the Maldives recommends that the Government of Liechtenstein:

  1. Continue to take measures against human trafficking by adopting a gender sensitive asylum procedure that responds to the specific needs of women and girl victims of trafficking, and;
  2. Continue its efforts to improve the representation of women in politics and to ensure equality in the labour market.

We wish Liechtenstein every success at this Review. Thank you, Madam Vice President
