Delivered by Her Excellency Dr Hala Hameed, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva

Thank you, Mr. President,

The Maldives extends a warm welcome to the delegation of Luxembourg to this third cycle review. We also thank the delegation for their presentation today.

The Maldives is encouraged by the Inter-Ministerial Human Rights Committee established by Luxembourg to oversee the country’s human rights obligations.

We are further encouraged by the amendment to Labour Code to address wage inequalities as well as to promote gender equality and women’s economic and participation. The Maldives also welcomes the legislative efforts by Luxembourg to combat violence against women and children.

The Maldives wishes to make the following recommendation to Luxembourg:

  1. Encourage Luxembourg to strengthen the juvenile justice system to be fully to bring in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child,
  2. Consider restorative justice practices to rehabilitate children in conflict with the law.

We wish Luxembourg every success at this Review.

Thank you, Mr. President.
