Maldives and Switzerland first established diplomatic relations in 1981 following the Maldives independence from Britain in 1965. Maldives attaches great significance to its bilateral relationship with Switzerland and hopes that it will continue to prosper politically, economically and socially as both Maldives and Switzerland represent similar views in issues such as Climate Change.The two countries foster strong economic ties mostly dominated by the tourism sector. According to the Maldives Tourism Board, in 2013 more than 34,000 Swiss tourists visited the Maldives. Switzerland is the 8th most important country of origin for visitors to Maldives. Income generated by Swiss tourists is estimated to be around USD 48 million according to the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs  and the volume of trade in 2014 was under USD 11 million.Although there has not been extensive high level visits, bilateral contact between the two countries are generally limited to meetings within international bodies. The Maldives embassy in Geneva, Switzerland has been accredited since 2010.
