Human Rights

The Permanent Mission of the Maldives engages regularly with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on matters of economic, social and cultural rights, including civil and political rights.

The Maldives has been a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council since 2023. Maldives won a seat at the HRC for the term 2023-2025 during the elections held at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 11th October 2022. His Excellency Dr. Asim Ahmed, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Offices in Geneva, was also elected as the Vice President of the Human Rights Council for 2023 representing the Asia Pacific Group.

The work of the Maldives at the Council is guided by the Maldives foreign policy which is based on the promotion and protection of human rights, good governance and drawing attention to the adverse effects of climate change. At the Council, Maldives continues to demonstrate its commitment to give a voice for the voiceless, the marginalized and small and developing countries.

The Maldives is being represented at the Human Rights Council for the third time. Maldives previously held a seat at the Council for two consecutive terms from 2011 to 2016.
