Births, Marriages, and Deaths

Registering a birth

If you are a Maldivian citizen who has given birth to a child abroad and you wish to register the birth in the Maldives, you will need to contact the Department of National Registration directly by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or by calling +960 3323814 / +960 3315440.

Registering a marriage

If you are Maldivian citizen who got married abroad and you wish to register your marriage in the Maldives, the process is as follows:

  1. Obtain a marriage certificate from the Muslim marriage authority abroad.
  2. Attest/ notarize the original marriage certificate from the Government approved Notary of the country in which the marriage took place
  3. Submit the documents (notarized original marriage certificate, ID card and passport copies of the couple) to the Maldives Mission to get the letter from the Mission which is required by the Maldives Family Court to register the marriage. 
  4. Once the letter from the Mission is received, the original of this letter along with the Application Form and other relevant documents have to be submitted to the Family Court of the Maldives to register the marriage.
