Through engagement with disaster risk reduction initiatives, and focus on preparedness for climate induced humanitarian crises, the Maldives has been a vocal advocate for the world’s most vulnerable populations.
Humanitarian Affairs is a high priority area for Maldives, in this regard, the Mission actively engages in humanitarian dialogue led by ECOSOC, OCHA, UNHRC and other humanitarian bodies. The Mission participates in discussions on best practices of humanitarian action, early warning systems and preparedness in addition to addressing grave human rights abuses in humanitarian contexts in the aim of upholding International Humanitarian Law.
As a strong advocate for small island developing states which are most vulnerable and dedication to the 2030 Agenda, Maldives understands the need for a cohesive and delicate balance of political, economic, environmental, and social factors that would assist in reaching the most vulnerable ensuring that no one is left behind. Maldives has participated in preliminary dialogue for the UN Global Compact which includes a comprehensive refugee framework, and as a country that has serious concerns regarding the conditions of refugees and migrants around the world, Maldives is involved in the implementation process of the Global Compact. As a country that receives many migrant workers in its territory, it is crucial for Maldives to be a part of such an initiative.
